Centenary Square redevelopment scoops Architect Journal Specification 2020 Award

The Centenary Square redevelopment project in Birmingham, completed in July 2019, has been awarded the prestigious first place for the Landscape category, at the Architect Journal Awards. The judging recognised an exceptional level of collaboration, across all the project team and praised the project as an innovative and successful piece of urban realm landscape.

Led by Acivico, providing multi-disciplinary services, this flagship project is one of the largest civic open spaces in Birmingham and one of the largest natural stone projects in Europe. Providing city residents and visitors with a central place to socialise in, sit, enjoy and play, the project boasts a unique 1,700m2 reflective water feature, transforming this gateway into Birmingham from a place that people simply pass through, to an iconic space with a unique identity that defines the city.

The AJ Specification awards celebrate outstanding working relationships, innovative and creative use of products and materials and showcases the best of architecture.

Judges recognised the ‘exceptional’ level of co-ordination required between project team, to accommodate the six million pedestrians passing through the site. This proved crucial in the management of complex site constraints, integrating multiple phases of construction, managing site traffic and phasing the project.

The scheme’s design helps minimise energy usage and resource use, integrating new public transport infrastructure, biodiverse landscaping, sustainable urban drainage – all with minimum maintenance. The judges praised how it ‘addresses all the requirements of a complex brief, including stakeholder engagement and sustainability requirements’, creating ‘a high-quality space with a positive impact on its surrounding environment’.

Chris Hall, Deputy CEO at Acivico said; ‘We are delighted with this achievement, which has added to the portfolio of prestigious awards this contract has deservedly been awarded and currently shortlisted for. Collaboration is at the heart of Acivico’s values and it is an honour for the work of the project team to be recognised’.
