Acivico has been instrumental in the Additional Primary Place programme in Birmingham over a number of years, working closely with Birmingham city Council’s Education team.

As part of the CWM Framework,Thomas Vale were appointed by Acivico to design and deliver an All-Through school in response to the increasing demands for additional secondary pupil spaces within the Small Heath and Yardley areas of Birmingham.

The existing Starbank Primary School is spread over 3 sites; Starbank Road, Starbank Annex (Hob Moor Road, and Bierton (Bierton Road). Primary school pupils are being relocated from these nearby schools.

The new school on the former Waverley School site will accommodate 1,320 pupils – 420 primary pupils over 2 forms of entry and 900 secondary pupils over 6 forms of entry and will open in September 2016.

The main school building is split into two elements, a two-storey Primary School and a three-storey Secondary School, which are organised around shared halls, dining and kitchen facilities. A double and triple-height dining space forms the social heart of the building, from which the school accommodation is arranged. This large, open, active space will be used to greet visitors on arrival, emphasising the unity and identity of the school.  A number of engagement meetings with the client, future students and locals, alongside close meeting with the planning department have helped to inform the design of the school, to ensure it meets the needs of all end users.
