Primary Focus

John is currently responsible for the management of our Site Surveying team which deals with the home extensions and loft conversions across the City. This involves marketing, technical excellence, training and development of staff, delivery of presentations to customers on new regulations, people management, recruitment and resource management and he is part of our judging panel for our Constructing Excellence awards.  He is also responsible for providing a quality national building regulation consultancy service for our external partners (using the LABC Partnership Scheme), including Ministry of Defence for Project SLAM in conjunction with Debut Services. (A JV with Lend Lease and Babcock)

Relevant experience

John has developed a varied wealth of knowledge and experience in his 38 years of working within the Construction Industry from apprentice bricklayer to site management, until turning from poacher to gamekeeper some 26 years ago by coming into Local Authority Building Control.

John has also previously worked on our Commercial team’s partnership service for building regulation issues with Marks & Spencer for a number of years.

He is a key member of Acivico Building Consultancy and has dealt with a variety of large-scale developments including retail, education projects as well as residential buildings. 

John has worked in a variety of positions within Building Control.  Prior to relocating in the West Midlands he worked in the Home Counties in two busy urban areas.  He has also worked at national level at the Local Government Association advising Members of Parliament, Council Members, Central Government, LABC and other interested parties on policy matters relating to public protection and building regulations.

His particular strengths and attributes are his ability to manage complex projects and deal with the pressures associated with them. He is also a qualified Business Coach(level 5 diploma)  He is a team player and understands the needs of others and in particular the need for putting the customer first in all his interactions.

This includes recognising potential problems at an early stage and he always endeavours to seek solutions.

Away from the Office

John’s home life has included extending and refurbishing his home (all with the right approvals!!) and his focus now is on the family with 2 teenage sons and the odd game of golf when time permits!!
